This, the rarest and most desirable of Churchill Toby Jugs, was produced in 1941 in an uncompleted limited edition of 350. Originally intended as part of the set of First World War leaders caricatured as Toby Jugs by Sir Frank Carruthers, this jug was 'pulled' from production in 1915 after Churchill's resignation over the Dardanelles debacle. The Carruthers & Gould Churchill model was reworked when Churchill became Prime Minister during the Second World War by the famous ceramics designer Clarice Cliff who added the patriotic bulldog 'seat' and legend around the base 'GOING INTO ACTION AND MAY GOD DEFEND THE RIGHT'. At Christmas 1941 the jug was offered for sale through Harrods who described it as : 'An historic addition to the famous Toby Jug series. This model of our Premier is a work of art, and will be treasured down the years as a treasured symbol of an epic age ...'
