Gilt copper, crescent shaped with rim rolled around a wire frame, the body engraved with the full achievement of Arms for the Honourable East India Company and Latin motto, 'Auspicio Regis et Senatus Angliae' (By command of the King and Parliament of England). Worn by British officers the Bengal, Madras and Bombay Presidencies, as a last vestige of armour and as symbolic of knightly rank, the gorget was retained until 1830, latterly being used to signify an officer on duty.
