Formerly Colonel-in-Chief of the Indian Army cavalry regiment 36th Jacob's Horse, Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII (acceded 20 January 1936,  abdicated 11 December 1936) and afterwards Duke Windsor) became Colonel-in-Chief  of The Scinde Horse (14th Prince of Wales's Own Cavalry) on the 1922 amalgamation of Jacob's with 35th Scinde Horse. The present bronze was inspired by a widely circulated informal photograph of the Prince taken on a visit to the regiment during his 1922 State Visit to India.
