Lieutenant General William Broome Salmon, Bombay Staff Corps (1809-1888)
General Salmon was born at Moradabad, India, the scion of a renowned Anglo-Indian family, his mother being Marion, daughter of Lt-Colonel Andrew Hearsey of the East India Company Service. During the First Afghan War (1838-1842) Salmon served with the Bombay Column of the Army of the Indus in Scinde and Afghanistan during 1838-39 and was present at the storm and capture of Ghuznee for which he received the medal (ref: Harts Army List 1888). Broome married Sarah, daughter of Colonel James Welsh, Madras Army, at Poona on 17 Nov 1836. They had fifteen children. In 1861 Broome, then of the 19th Bombay Native Infantry was appointed to the Bombay Staff Corps on its formation.
