‘Snaffles’ was the son of a Warwickshire bootmaker. He served briefly as a Gunner with the R.G.A., and later was invalided from the army during the First World War, He then joined The Graphic as an illustrator to produce some of his best work portraying military types such as 'The Indian Cavalry - Yi-Hai!', 'Anzac', 'Jock', and 'The Gunner', upon which his enduring reputation as English sporting and military was established through the production limited edition prints with humorous bye-lines and trade mark vignettes or remarque images in the border.
