Sir Charles Wakefield, Kt., (afterwards Viscount Wakefield of Hythe) (1859-1941) , was a celebrated oil industry entrepreneur and the founder of Castrol Oil. He was Lord Mayor of London, 1915-16, and a benefactor and philantropist across a wide range of interests.

M.Norbert-Cheveau was a graduate of Rennes University and came to England in 1893 as General Manager of Louis Bleriot's Aeronautics based at Belfast Chambers, Regent Street, London. He established and ran the Bleriot flying schools and factories at Hendon, Brooklands and Addlestone. On 12 April 1911, Pierre Prier, the chief instructor at the Hendon school, made the first non-stop flight between London and Paris in a Bleriot monoplane on 1911, flying 4 hours 55 minutes. It is probable that this was one of the ‘successes’ referred to on this trophy.
